Winding the Warp

This is the first process in setting up the loom. The warp yarns are wound around pegs on a warping board. The warping board is meant to hold the length of the warp threads under even tension to then be transferred onto the loom.

This picture shows the warp as it is being put onto the loom. It is secured and rolled onto the back beam. In this process, consistent tension is also important.

Dressing the Loom

Threading the Heddles

After dressing the loom, each warp yarn will be individually threaded through the heddles. These thin flat strips have an eye hole that yarns pass through which will help to control the weaving pattern.

Threading the Reed

This part of the process will determine the density of the fabric you are weaving. The closer the threads are in the reed, the tighter the weave will be.

Tying on the Warp

This is the last step before the weaving can start. The ends of the warp yarn are tied onto the front beam with an even tension.
